If we could only use one word to describe the Minnesota Star of the North Prevention Coalition (Star), connection would be it!
The goal of the Coalition is to form and support the operation of a network of neighborhood and community prevention partnerships to reduce and/or prevent the problems caused by the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
We do this by making connections. Connecting local efforts on a regional basis, connecting the regions with each other and connecting local and regional efforts with statewide efforts.
Let's take each of these levels of connecting and describe how it happens and the outcomes of each.
Connecting local efforts on a regional basis. Star has a contract with a local provider in each of the seven regions in Minnesota. The regional prevention specialists (RPS's) offer technical assistance to local coalitions, especially in the areas of technology and public policy. The RPS's coordinate at least one yearly regional forum, often with the common theme of bringing coalitions, agencies and individuals together to share ideas and resources for activities within their region. Through these forums and other activities each of the regions helps accomplish the outcomes identified in the Star's workplan.
Connecting regions with each other The Star database of member coalitions helps connect coalitions with each other all across Minnesota. The database allows anyone to search for a particular approach or program that they may be interested in implementing. This allows for mentoring, learning and connecting with each other. The database is available on our World Wide Web page at (http://www.miph.org/star). Technology has been an extremely helpful tool to the coalition to make these connections. Meetings of the Regional Prevention Specialists also contribute to sharing among and connecting the regions.
Connecting local and regional efforts with statewide efforts Our statewide efforts have mainly been in the area of public policy. We all need to be connected and educated concerning the alcohol issues that involve our youth. Star can help educate members on what public policy approaches can truly change the environment that supports underage alcohol access and use.
We need to know that we do have strength in numbers to affect change, both locally and statewide. Sound public health will come when the citizenry is know-ledgeable and motivated to create the future. Minnesota Star of the North can contribute to that as we help inform and connect the individuals, programs and coalitions across Minnesota.
