Special projects spice up MPRC's menu

If the Clearinghouse is the daily meat and potatoes of the MPRC, then special projects like the Using the Internet book are the homemade salsa made in late summer or the fresh cranberry-orange relish served at Thanksgiving.

Using the Internet: A Resource Guide for People Concerned about Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use Problems was first published in 1996. Not solely a project of the MPRC, many organizations commit time and resources to the development of this book. Now in its third edition, this 58-page book is an invaluable resource for locating prevention information on the Internet.

This book provides an introduction to using the Internet, and then a directory of prevention sites on the World Wide Web. The directory is arranged by topic, such as tobacco or media, and an index is provided to help readers locate Web sites by the name of an organization. Once the book is complete, the Web sites listed in it are also made available as a collection of links on the MPRC Web site.

The Internet book is just one example of the special projects that MPRC undertakes. We also work each year to promote Minnesota Chemical Health Week. MPRC team members compile a year-long calendar of events, an idea sampler and Ghost Out packets to be distributed to interested schools and organizations.

So, while we do consistently serve Minnesota's prevention practitioners the staples, we never stop trying to keep the menu interesting.
