MANY READERS MAY KNOW THAT the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center (MPRC) publishes this newsletter, or that we distribute free print materials through our clearinghouse. Some may have called the MPRC for research assistance or for help in locating a speaker for an event. Whatever you know about us, chances are that's not all there is to know. With that in mind, we'd like to devote this issue of Impact! to telling you all about the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center and what we can do for you.

One service of MPRC is this newsletter. We provide 7,000 readers print copies (free of charge), plus, all past issues since May 1996 are full-text online. When we are determining the content for each issue, we consider you, the reader. We ask the following questions, "What would be interesting to our readers?" or "What important developments in the broader world of prevention or the Minnesota prevention world should our readers know about?" Our overall goal with this newsletter is to promote chemical health by providing accurate and timely prevention information to our clients.

Therefore, in this issue, we offer an article about the new federal focus of using "scientifically-defensible" prevention programs. Future program planning, grants and funding may require knowledge and understanding of this new way of thinking.

Also note the short sketches that demonstrate ways our services have been used successfully by people like you. We considered the thousands of customer requests we received last year, got on the telephone, and interviewed some of the people who made those requests.

What emerged were some interesting success stories and hopefully some new or practical ways you, too, can use our many services and resources.
