A media campaign was announced April 30, by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. This campaign is promoting Minnesota's "Not a Drop" zero tolerance law regarding underage alcohol use and driving. The campaign's introduction comes at a time when many Minnesota students are attending proms and graduation parties.
Currently, 27 states have zero tolerance laws aimed at reducing the number of underage persons injured and killed in traffic crashes. Although Minnesota's law was passed in 1993, many young people and their parents are not aware of the legislation and how it can affect them. Under "Not a Drop," a driver under 21 years of age who is stopped after drinking any amount of alcohol may lose his/her license. With a first violation, the license is suspended for 30 days; a subsequent offense will result in a 6-month suspension.
