From The State The good ol' summertime by Al Fredrickson |
With the coming of warmweather and school letting out, many of us are making our summer plans. Here in Minnesota, with what seems like unending winter, our summer can take on a certain frenzy of activity. Boating, water-skiing, swimming, fishing, camping, biking, picnics and many more activities bring us out of our homes to enjoy the fine weather.
While we are enjoying ourselves, it is important to remember to be responsible with our behavior and be good role models for young people. Driving while intoxicated also applies to vehicles other than cars, trucks and motorcycles. Boating while intoxicated laws apply to water craft, including personal watercraft. Operating any equipment after drinking is risky, dangerous behavior. Bike riding in an impaired state runs the risk of serious injury. Intoxication and exposure to the elements can be dangerous in summer as well as in winter.
Now that we are able to get out of our homes and picnic, we have another opportunity to be responsible hosts. This is a chance to incorporate nonalcoholic party drinks into our picnics and celebrations. Bringing refreshments to the lake, park or beach should include nonintoxicating drinks. Many public parks and lakes restrict alcohol; it is best to know the rules before you plan the menu. MPRC has materials to help make your summer activities safe and enjoyable. They have idea booklets on responsible hosting (listed below) that should help you plan your party, picnic or barbecue.
As you enjoy the long awaited Minnesota summer, please be safe and responsible.
