And Down Will Come Baby
Targeted to high school students, describes the effects of exposure to alcohol and drugs on the fetus during pregnancy. The purpose of this tape is to promote an awareness of the problem among teenagers who are at risk for both unplanned pregnancy and substance use. H/17 minutes

Bullies
Bullying can be the first introduction the elementary student has to a life of violence. Successfully tested on students from K through 5th grades, this unique video-based curriculum can contribute to help stop the potential violence-forming lifestyle of bullying. Bullies will learn what it feels like to be bullied and victims will learn how to handle these situations. PI/20 minutes

Watch What You Drink
ABC News Correspondent Tom Jarriel reports on growing concerns surrounding the sinister use of the drug rohypnol, also known as the “date rape drug.” Includes interviews with women who believe they were raped and assaulted while unknowingly under the influence of rohypnol. HCA/15 minutes

Natural Born Leaders: Training Teens for Substance Use Prevention
This project illustrates ways in which peer led programs may be modeled. Targeted to teachers, parents and community groups, this documentary program shows two examples of successful skills-based, peer-led prevention programs in dramatically different environments-one a middle school in rural Minnesota, the other a high school in New York City. Coming Together on Prevention
Presents three prevention models based on NIDA sponsored research. “Reconnecting Youth” is a school-based program aimed at high-risk high school students. “Strengthening Families” provides parenting skills to substance abusing parents and drug resistance skills to their children. “Project Star” is a multifaceted community-based prevention program that uses schools, parents, media, community and public policy to prevent drug abuse among youth. What Should I Tell My Child About Drinking?
Offers viewers advice both about good parenting and how to discuss alcohol. Divided into two parts: Part A looks at the need for parents and other caregivers to take responsibility for discussing alcohol with children, which includes examining their own drinking habits and developing specific rules and consequences for violations of those rules. Part B uses teachable moments to instruct parents about how they can initiate alcohol-related conversations with their children when they are likely to hear key messages. A/45 minutes

The Adventures of Pep & Fresh: The Choke’s on You
A tobacco prevention program for grades K-3 that tells the story of Pep, Fresh, Nosmo King (No Smoking) and the evil Nick O. Tine to help educate kids about tobacco use. P/10 minutes

Sebastian: An Extraordinary Life
As a warning against the possibly devastating consequences of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, this program about a young boy suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome sends a powerful message to expectant mothers. Born to a 15-year-old and placed with foster parents, Sebastian has permanent brain damage and requires almost constant medical care. Viewers will feel a powerful desire to avoid creating this sad situation. HCA/28 minutes

What is Your Drug I.Q.?
Created to dispel the myths and half-truths surrounding the common drugs of abuse, this video involves the audience by leading them through a series of true/false questions that test their knowledge on alcohol, marijuana, LSD, cocaine, heroin and inhalants. Students will increase their awareness of the physical and psychological effects of drug abuse, along with the impact of drugs on society. MHCA/17 minutes

Back to Love: Parental Violence Intervention
Designed to encourage persons experiencing violence within their families to seek help. Family violence is discussed via vignettes with adults who share their stories of recovery with the viewers. This video can also be helpful to educators, teen parents, health and social service professionals working with families at risk for family violence. HCA/15 minutes

Changing Channels
Tells the story of five teenagers under pressure to go to a party to drink. An unusual television experience introduces them to ideas about alcohol that help them rethink their own assumptions and attitudes. As they channel surf, they see key parts of several stories (a teen drama, game show, police story and others) with different messages about alcohol. M/30 minutes

Hemp: Chasing Smoke
With the increasing perception that marijuana use is essentially harmless, it is more important than ever that people get credible, accurate information about this drug. In this video, medical experts, educators and people of all ages share their knowledge to separate the myths from the reality. MHC/30 minutes

Too Smart To Start, Too Cool To Smoke
A mix of dramatic documentary segments, comedy sketches, straight facts and contemporary music that will simultaneously entertain and inform teens. The video empowers teens while encouraging them to join the fight for a tobacco-free environment. M/17 minutes

Without Warning
Alcohol overdosing or poisoning or ethanol overdosing or “EO” in medical terminology is the subject of this video. Victims who have lost a child to EO share their experiences by spreading the information which could have saved their child’s life: how alcohol kills, the symptoms to watch for, what helps and what doesn’t, the importance of swift medical attention-these elements round out a powerful message. Faces of Addiction
Use this video to help your community develop solutions to substance abuse problems-from town hall discussions and youth speak-outs, to pizza and video evenings with parents and kids, to lunchtime seminars for company employees. A Matter of Facts-1997 update This straightforward piece was developed to assist post-secondary institutions comply with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989. Health risks associated with the use/abuse of alcohol and other drugs are presented in an easy-to-read chart. Readers will learn where individual drugs are categorized in the federal Schedule of Controlled Substances. State and federal penalties related to controlled substances are clearly outlined along with selected Minnesota laws regulating purchase, possesion and consumption of alcohol. 8 pp/$.35 Order #113

Web Stickers Available The Minnesota Institute of Public Health (MIPH) has free stickers available pointing to their World Wide Web site. These stickers come with a special adhesive making it easy to attach and detach them from computers, monitors and other surfaces. The MIPH web site contains many online public health resources, a calendar of Minnesota prevention events and much more. It is also the home base for some other web sites, so be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page to get access to the home pages of the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center, the Minnesota Star of the North Prevention Coalition and the Minnesota Gambling Problems Resource Center.

Using the Internet: A resource guide for people concerned about alcohol, tobacco and other drug use problems-1997 update This guide is designed to provide you with Internet resources on alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse (ATOD) prevention materials. In addition to listing Internet addresses for selected prevention resources, this book also includes information about: what is the Internet; tools and components of the Internet; search engines; netiquette (Internet etiquette); and a section on citing Internet sources. The bulk of this guide is a catalog of Web sites and a few mailing lists relating to issues surrounding ATOD. FAS Idea Sampler to promote awareness of fetal alcohol syndrome and effects-1997 update The Idea Sampler was developed as a step toward coordinating current initiatives and efforts being conducted in Minnesota to prevent FAS/FAE. A questionnaire was sent to agencies and organizations across Minnesota to solicit programs, materials and resources to be highlighted in this resource guide. Programs and materials showcased within the Idea Sampler are as complete and inclusive as possible given response to the questionnaire. Although it was not possible to feature all materials, those selected represent commonly-used resources addressing the issue of FAS/FAE. Formal evaluations have not been conducted on many of the highlighted materials. For this reason, contents of this Idea Sampler are intended to provide ideas to consider when implementing FAS/FAE initiatives. Call MPRC for information.
