Star’s role in policy work

The Minnesota Star of the North Prevention Coalition will be starting its fourth year in December. Star of the North is a statewide network of local coalitions connecting together to reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use problems. One of the objectives of the Coalition is to change and strengthen local and state policy and enforcement, as well as norms and standards that influence the use and nonuse of these substances for youth and adults alike in our communities. Star of the North’s efforts in the policy arena began with publishing The Role of Policy in the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use Problems. This position paper describes the Star of the North’s beliefs about strategies that focus on influencing formal and informal social policies in ways that discourage high risk behavior and encourage and promote health and safety. This publication is free of charge and can be obtained by calling Dawn Olson at 612-427-5310.

There are numerous examples of policy change happening across Minnesota. Here are just a few:

These are just a few examples of what is truly a new awareness of the need for and effectiveness of policy approaches to preventing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use problems.

The Star of the North Coalition is also in the planning stages for a statewide public awareness campaign that will focus on the “norm” side of social policy. This campaign will help build awareness of norms and guidelines for adult responsible use of alcohol. Materials will be developed that can be adapted at the local community level. The Star of the North Coalition will also be collaborating with the Minnesota Join Together Coalition in its efforts to reduce the “supply” side of alcohol for underage youth. Together we are making a difference.
